Learn to Swim – Stage 4
Suitability:
– Able to swim 10m (front and back) unaided
Stage 4 begins to introduce more structured swimming techniques. Swimmers refine their body position and kicking skills across all four strokes: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly kick.
Lessons also introduce sculling, improved floating control and rotational movements in the water. The aim is to develop stronger aquatic skills and increase distance swimming while maintaining good technique.
On completion, swimmers achieve the Swim England Learn to Swim Stage 4 Award and a 20m distance badge.

Learn to Swim – Stage 5
Suitability:
– Can swim 20m (front and back) unaided
In Stage 5, swimmers begin to develop full stroke technique across all four competitive strokes. Lessons focus on improving coordination, breathing patterns and overall swimming efficiency.
Children also practise sculling, treading water and advanced rotation skills, helping them build greater confidence and control in deeper water. By the end of this stage, swimmers should be able to swim 25 metres confidently using recognised stroke techniques.
Successful swimmers receive the Swim England Learn to Swim Stage 5 Award.

Learn to Swim – Stage 6
Suitability:
– Can swim 25m (front and back) unaided
Stage 6 further refines stroke technique and introduces more structured swimming practice. Swimmers focus on coordinated breathing, efficient stroke timing and improved propulsion through the water.
Lessons also include water safety awareness and preparation for physical exercise in swimming. By this stage, swimmers should be able to swim longer distances using recognised strokes while maintaining strong technique.
Completion leads to the Swim England Learn to Swim Stage 6 Award.
